SINGAPORE, April 2 (UPI) -- Singapore Airlines announced
Wednesday it will cut an additional 60 flight per week in
response to softening demand related to the war in Iraq and
the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
The announcement now brings the total number of cuts since
the start of the war in Iraq to 125 services per week, or 13.6
percent of capacity in terms of available seat kilometers. The
latest cuts include the suspension of all services to
Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from April 15 and to Hiroshima, Japan, from
April 9 to May 31.
There will be fewer weekly frequencies to destinations in
all regions, in particular Asia, where services to Hong Kong
will be cut from 41 to 26 per week. Weekly services will also
be reduced to Guangzhou, China, (from 7 to 5), Hanoi, Vietnam,
(from 6 to 4) and Taipei, Taiwan, (from 20 to 16).
Other major cities affected include Los Angeles and New
York, and Amsterdam, Netherlands; Frankfurt, Germany, and
Manchester, England. In addition, the airline's launch of
thrice-weekly services to Bangalore, India, originally planned
for May 1, 2003, will be deferred until June 12.
